Up until very recently, we've just been using the Bumbo as our highchair. Sarah lent it to us, and it's a fabulous little baby item. Light, portable, and fairly hard to tip over, it's been great. For the last little while, she's been able to kick and shift it across the table, so I was starting to worry a bit about her tipping it. And sure enough, we had a little accident last week. Uncle Murray and Auntie Kim were there to see "Bad Parenting Moment #15". They reacted really well. I think James and I did too, although I almost had a heart attack.
DAD NOTE: I always react well. I'm Mr. Mellow in the house of estrogen...
We had Rowan in the Bumbo on a chair between James and I so we could feed her dinner while we ate. She was doing her usual, kicking and flapping her arms, excited about dinner and just life in general. Then she tipped herself right off the chair, with her head hitting the table first, then the table leg, and finally coming to rest on her face on the floor, still in the Bumbo. Well, my heart jumped out of my throat! I picked her up, took her out of the Bumbo, and straight outside (a little trick we learned from Gramma Lynne). She calmed down okay outside, but as soon as I brought her in, she started to cry again. Out came the magic boobie, and that fixed it. How terrifying to watch her hit the floor! She had a rather large goose egg that lasted for a few days, but the fall didn't stop her from kicking and waving her arms wildly when we put her back in the Bumbo, on one of the deck chairs this time. Much bigger and more stable.
Cue Gramma Robin to the rescue! Some wonderful friends of theirs whose grandchildren have grown out of some of the things they had for them, were kind enough to give us a stroller, baby gate and a portable highchair/booster seat! It was exactly what I was looking for! She straps in and to the chair, it has three height adjustments and the back and tray come off so we can use it for a booster seat later! Score Gramma and Grampa!
