Life in Dad-land

Been a while since I posted anything, so I thought I better get in on the action before friends, family and Rowan (in the future, obviously) start to think I'm not involved! This is the downside to being a professional writer: I write all day for clients then spend a lot of free time writing for me (to make $$) and then find that when actual free time appears I'm not interested in writing anymore.

Anyways, onto the family.
Not too long ago we had an action-packed weekend where we were almost non-stop on-the-move. Saturday started off with Rowan and I getting booted out of the house. Yep, Bob threw us out. She's occasionally evil like that.   ;-)
Actually, my ex from Texas, who has a family of her own now, made a great suggestion that we've been trying to implement. She noted that her husband is great at staying home and watching their kids whenever she asks, but lamented that it'd be nice if he would have taken the kids out more often to let her enjoy some at home peace and quiet. I mentioned this idea to Bob and she jumped all over it, like a geek on free comic day.

So now, every other weekend or so, Rowan and I just take off for a few hours on Saturday morning. Sometimes we run errands, or get groceries. Sometimes we just wander, and I can't wait till it's nice enough to wander round outside with her. It's a great experience for both of us, getting some alone time in the big wide world, and one that I continue to enjoy most of the time.

Later on that same day the three of us went out to the Cave for a surprise 40th Birthday dinner for our friend Troy. We didn't really know anyone that well, but did find our other friends Gary and Melissa and a couple other familiar faces to sit with. It was another fun night, especially since Gary, Melissa and Troy's wife Rhonda all snatch up Rowan at every available opportunity. The party went well, Troy was really surprised, and we were able to get home before Rowan got to crusty and put her to bed.
We're in a cave. Can you tell?
On Sunday we ran out to Vanscoy to visit our friends Jay & Cary and their daughter, my God-daughter, Morgan, as well as another friend visiting from Calgary, Kurt. Brief though the visit was, it was also great to see everyone, particularly Kurt.

And Jay thinks that he's no good with babies!
"I just felt my lap get warm..."

All in all, it was a fun weekend, but a busy one. Our little girl just seems to jive well with pretty much everyone, which is one of our goals for her.

The only down side to these weekends is just how hard it makes it to get anything done round the house, but as my friends with older kids seem to delight in telling me, personal time becomes something of a valuable commodity the older your kid gets, so I should get use to all this running around and insanity.

Good thing Rowan is so damn cute...
