So we had Rowan's 6 month checkup the other day and found out a couple of things.
I wondered why for the last few weeks, on and off, Rowan has had this odd yellowish tinge around her nostrils. I couldn't quite figure out what it was and so asked the doc. She smiled and asked, "Do you feed her a lot of carrots, squash or sweet potatoes?" "Well," I replied, "not the squash, but yes, carrots and sweet potatoes." "It's carrot nose," she said with a bigger smile. "I'm sorry, what?" I asked. Apparently if you feed babies (or yourself for that matter) a lot of foods that are orange, you get a yellow tinge around their nose. Huh. Carrot nose. New to me. So we're mixing in more peas. It's gone now, but we've been a little lazy about introducing new foods since it's just so easy to feed her the foods that I have already made up for her. So new this week was real oatmeal (not the processed baby powder kind) and we're going to try apples tomorrow. That way I've got some fruit to mix in with her oatmeal. Ugg, oatmeal. I think all hot cereal is pretty disgusting, but don't tell Rowan that.
James found a great website with tips on making your own baby food. Most of it's pretty common sense, but you know what they say about common sense... They do have some great ideas on making your own baby cereal. I'm constantly surprised at how much salt and sugar they put into baby food considering that you're not supposed to give babies salt. So I think I'll pick up some brown rice to make my own rice cereal so we can have that too. All you have to do is grind it up in the food processor and cook it like you would regularly. I always think it must get boring eating the same thing every day, but she still loves all her foods.
We also weighed her again. I thought she would be around 12lbs, James thought 13lbs. She's only 10lbs & 5oz. She's gained about 2oz. Sigh. Back on the domperidon to up my supply, because apparently my body just doesn't feel up to making enough for her. More solids. We think she's always going to be a wee girl, but we do need her gaining weight a bit faster to keep up with her height.
She's nice and healthy other wise and hitting all her milestones, so the doc's still not really worried about her. I tell you though, she's a much happier kid since my supply came back up. Amazing how much difference a full belly makes on her mood.
Oh, and here's what happens when someone won't go back to sleep at 4am.
