Well, we tried it. And it went over wonderfully!
I've been curious about trying to give Rowan some rice cereal for a couple of weeks now. She's been nursing like crazy during the day so she's obviously very hungry. She's also been completely enthralled with watching me eat, even reaching for food that I'm putting in my mouth. How tempting to let her suck on a chocolate lady finger...
But no! I try to be a responsible mom. I was going to wait a bit longer to try (sort of) solid food, but today I thought, what the heck, let's give it a go. And she was a champ! She loved the cereal, tried to grab the spoon to get it into her mouth quicker and sucked the spoon as far into her mouth as I'd let her. She didn't even spit any out. There was no pause, just spoon in, came out clean. Well mostly clean. She still did that cute little thing where it's like she's trying to suck on the food while it's in her mouth, so a little comes out of her little pouted lips. So cute. She ate the 1/2 tablespoon that I made for her and also nursed afterward.
It was fun, but also a little sad since I know that this is the first step towards less breastfeeding. Despite our sometimes difficult nursing sessions, it's still one of the more enjoyable things about having a baby. Feeding her real food will be fun too, but I'll miss that dopey "milk-drunk" look she gets after a good nursing.
They grow up too fast!
