Then It All Went Dark...

So I was awakened this morning at 6am, not by a baby crying, but a monitor beeping. In my sleep-deprived state, my first thought was, "The monitor got unplugged. Stupid fat cat." Then I noticed that my alarm clock was out. Next thought, "Heater in the baby's room flipped the breaker. Stupid house wired by monkeys." So I grab my bathrobe since apparently hell's frozen over and it's currently -45 with the windchill and then I realize everything's out upstairs. Slowly my brain begins to process what's going on and I realize that there are no street lights either. So I peek out Rowan's windows and the whole block, possibly farther away than that, has no power. Great. On the coldest day yet. That's when I miss Mum's place with her wood heaters. Thinking of this, I head downstairs to check the thermostat. It's still 19 in the house, so the power hasn't been out long.
I wander back to bed since Rowan's still asleep and there's nothing else to do, cursing myself for not charging my iPod before bed since it'll be my only entertainment for a while. By this time, James has woken up, likely because of my stumbling around trying to figure out what's going on. Shortly after that, Rowan wakes up. So we're all up at 6:30 with no power, James has to go to work, no light to change a diaper by and the prospect of a very frosty morning in the house.
Since Rowan's not going back to sleep with us in our bed where it's warmer (LOVING the micro-fleece sheets!), I decide to get up to nurse her. In the half an hour between my first trip downstairs and now, the temperature has dropped from 19 to 17. Damn! No wonder I'm so cold! We're almost done nursing and I'm trying to decide who to call first, Gramma Lynne or Sarah to see who's got power and coffee on at 6:30am, and Huzzah! The power comes back on! So we immediately crank up the heat and turn all the heaters on upstairs to that James can shower without having icicles form on his mustache.
Ah, winter. What a lovely season.
