Health Nurses: The Worriers of the Baby World

Get that camera out of my face! I'm eating!

So I think I mentioned in my last post that we went to get Rowan's 4 month immunizations last week. The other thing that came out of that was that we've come to the conclusion that health nurses are just there to freak you out.
We've had a couple concerns about Rowan's weight in the last little while. When she became more active, she lost a bit of weight and I think I was having some supply issues, so she maybe wasn't getting quite as much to eat. But we took her to the doctor for a check up, brought this up and we monitored her weight gain and it seems to be back on track. That was right around 4 months. 2 weeks or so later when we had the immunizations, the health nurse was "very concerned", as Rowan is only in the 3rd percentile for growth. 3rd percentile! I'm taking Stats! I know how small that is! Then she starts talking about getting a referral to the health nurses at the hospital who specialize in nutrition and then there was some other talk about "adding calories to formula"...What does that even mean? Am I starving my child? Is my milk no good? Am I drying up? Help me!!!
I call James, who has gotten really good at talking me off the edge and he tells me a ton of things that I already know. Like: I was a small kid, like really small. Rowan's only a pound or two behind where I was when I was her age (thank you Mum for giving me my baby book); that the doctor wasn't concerned and in fact said her kids were the same way, looking like she starved them (love my doc, no bullsh@#! kinda girl); that the growth charts are only averages; that she's on track for most of her milestones and I think ahead on one or two. I know all this. It's just difficult when you have different health care professionals telling you different things. I miss the midwives.
She also seemed very disgusted when I mentioned that Rowan was doing really well eating the rice cereal, even though it's a bit earlier than they recommend for introducing solid food (not that I consider rice cereal solid). So what's the difference if I introduce rice cereal or if I supplement with formula? She wasn't used to having either of them. At least the cereal we planned on giving her shortly anyway.
Unfortunately, it's been typical of a lot of the health care professionals we saw, with the exception of the midwives and the lactation consultant. The obstetrician went from 0 to c-section in about 3 seconds when all we wanted was the vacuum. They're supposed to reassure you, not terrify you!
